Championing Responsible AI for Healthcare in Africa

Rosalind combines her experience as a physician and a researcher to improve health systems through innovation with an emphasis on HIV and sexually transmitted infections in Uganda. She is the Founding Director of the Academy for Health Innovation, Uganda based at the Infectious Diseases Institute, Makerere University and is a Clinical Principal Research Associate at University of Cambridge, UK. She is a Principal Investigator (PI) on various studies investigating the impact of digital technologies. She is co-PI for the Hub for Sexual and Reproductive Health in Africa (HASH), and has sat on advisory teams for Gates Foundation and WHO on AI in health. She and her team developed the ARTAccess App tool which allows HIV drug delivery in private pharmacies for over 40,000 people living with HIV countrywide. Their Call for Life tool has supported the Ugandan Ministry of Health COVID-19 response and continues to provide automated phone call support to people living with HIV and TB. She leads a Medical Drones project funded by the UK Medical Research Council, and Johnson & Johnson which is evaluating the delivery of HIV medication to remote areas. Rosalind is a strong advocate for multi-disciplinary work, e.g. History of HIV project that brought together artists, social scientists and bio-medical teams to create an exhibition at the Uganda Museum and is now a film.  She is a module leader for The Masters in Population Health Sciences - Global Health theme at Cambridge and is a PhD and Masters supervisor at Makerere and Cambridge.
