Championing Responsible AI for Healthcare in Africa
Rosalind
combines her experience as a physician and a researcher to improve health
systems through innovation with an emphasis on HIV and sexually transmitted
infections in Uganda. She is the Founding Director of the Academy for Health
Innovation, Uganda based at the Infectious Diseases Institute, Makerere
University and is a Clinical Principal Research Associate at University of
Cambridge, UK.
She is a Principal Investigator (PI) on various studies investigating the
impact of digital technologies. She is co-PI for the Hub for Sexual and
Reproductive Health in Africa (HASH), and has sat on advisory teams for Gates
Foundation and WHO on AI in health. She and her team developed the ARTAccess
App tool which allows HIV drug delivery in private pharmacies for over 40,000
people living with HIV countrywide. Their Call for Life tool has supported
the Ugandan Ministry of Health COVID-19 response and continues to provide
automated phone call support to people living with HIV and TB.
She leads a Medical Drones project funded by the UK Medical Research
Council, and Johnson & Johnson which is evaluating the delivery of HIV
medication to remote areas.
Rosalind is a strong advocate for multi-disciplinary work, e.g. History of
HIV project that brought together artists, social scientists and bio-medical
teams to create an exhibition at the Uganda Museum and is now a film.
She is a module leader for The Masters in Population Health Sciences - Global
Health theme at Cambridge and is a PhD and Masters supervisor at Makerere and
Cambridge.
