Connecting Africa has compiled a list of significant announcements from Gitex Africa 2026, which took place this week in Marrakech, Morocco.
Inwi, China Mobile to deploy private 5G for industrial use
Moroccan telco Inwi is partnering with China Mobile International to deploy what it describes as Morocco's first private 5G network dedicated to industrial applications.
The deal was signed on the sidelines of the event and the companies said the network will be deployed on a 52-hectare industrial site in the country's eastern region.
Under the deal, Inwi will design, deploy and operate the high-speed network for one of China Mobile's key regional clients.
The industrial site, based in Nador near the port complex, is intended to set a continental benchmark for advanced automation and digitalization.
"This deployment illustrates Inwi's ambition to support the digital transformation of Moroccan industrial players by offering them sovereign, high-performance infrastructures adapted to critical uses. This project paves the way for a new generation of Industry 4.0 in Morocco," Inwi said in a statement.
Along with other telcos Maroc Telecom and Orange Maroc, Inwi launched 5G in Morocco in November 2025.
Orange Maroc, Ericsson to create private 5G lab for enterprises
Orange Maroc and Ericsson signed a partnership to co-develop and promote private 5G network solutions for Morocco's enterprise sector.
The deal will see Ericsson provide a complete private 5G network platform – including its radio and 5G core technologies – for Orange Maroc's 5G Lab to create an environment for demonstration and experimentation.
According to Orange Maroc, the lab will serve as a means of developing a rich catalogue of business-to-business (B2B) use cases, allowing Moroccan companies to test and validate solutions and discover the benefits of 5G for improving productivity and optimizing operational costs.
The companies said they planned to define and structure a catalogue of solutions targeting key industrial use cases, particularly in smart logistics, utilities and energy.

Nexus Core Systems earmarked the outskirts of Casablanca for a US$1.2 billion, next-generation data center dedicated to AI.
The data center is designed to reach a capacity of up to 500MW and will be powered entirely by renewable energy supplied by TAQA Morocco.
"Yesterday, I witnessed something historic at Gitex Africa 2026. Morocco signed a landmark agreement to build the Nexus AI Factory – the first sovereign AI infrastructure platform of its kind in Africa. $1.2 billion in initial investment. 500 megawatts of planned capacity. Powered by American technology Nvidia and engineered to make Morocco the AI gateway for Africa, Europe, and beyond," said US Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan III in a post on X.
